In terms of distance, International Tourist Zone of Wonsan-Mt Kumgang is in the advantageous area that takes not more than 3 hours to come and go  by air from 40 odd cities with a population of more than one million such as Khavaropsk, Vladivostok in Russia, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang in China

In a large scale development project of this zone, it is to develop into a world class one that has a harmonious combination of various recreation and cultural facilities and ecological environment around Wonsan city. And the project also includes to develop the area of Mt. Kumgang, Tongchon and Sogwang temple as the tourist zone of historic relics that ecological environment is absolutely preserved, international tourist region for recreation and treatment while development and operation can be carry out simultaneously.  

Development of the city centering Wonsan includes the construction of the city main, resident area, industrial area, afforestation, tourist facilities and modernization of lodging facilities. The construction of the city main covers deep inside ranging from Mt. Sambong in Wonsan city up to the sea coast. Around there, business service districts, cultural recreation districts and sci-tech exchange districts will be distributed, as well as to make colorful day and night sceneries. It is planned that all of these make the best of modern city center.

It is expected to supplement and expand the facilities of lodging, exercise and public catering according to the needs while operating existing service facilities in the region of Masikryong Ski Resort and Ullim waterfall.

It is expected to open up a new mountain-climbing route from Sogam temple to the front of Pomunam, reconstruct and modernize the existing thousand odd units of lodging facilities and adjoining tourist facilities. 

In the development of Tongchon area, it is planned to reconstruct or newly build 1000-odd units of hotels and medical treatment facilities respectively by creating healthcare and medical treatment facilities in the district of Sijung lake. In addition, 5600 odd facilities of lodging, tourism and service will be built in the area of Tongjong lake. And also it is expected to build up supplemental tourist facilities including bathing resort, boating resort and passenger wharf in Chongsokjong area.   

It is expected to develop Mt. Kumgang area into a tourist recreation region of multi-purpose and multi-function majoring in the environmental protection of nature.
