The Phyongchon Shipping & Marine Trading Company is the only business in the DPRK building various types of plastic ships that are now in vogue worldwide in a small and medium-size ship building.
The Thongchon Jisong plastic Shipyard affiliated to the company builds diverse plastic ships for gill-net, trawl, crabbing, lamp fishing, shallow-sea cultivation and angling.
Situated in Thongchon County of Kangwon Province on the coast of Korea East Sea, the shipyard is equipped with up-to-date equipment with which to build plastic ships of various capacities, and employed technicians and skilled workers who are well versed in high shipbuilding technology and rich experience.
GFRP has been applied to the shipbuilding since 1960s and is now recognized as the best material in this field. The ships built by the factory have no joint on their hull surface, which is smooth enough to protect shellfish and seaweeds from attaching. After being built, they need no repair in dock, thus management expense is rated less than 7.5-10% of that of a wooden or iron vessel.
In particular, advantage of hull surface lessens resistance remarkably and hull is 20% lighter in weight than an iron vessel and 27% than a wooden one(when it is wet), that making it possible to run 30% faster than the above vessels and to increase loading capacity 2.5 times min. in terms of volume.
Also, its fuel consumption at the same speed is 70% of iron and/or wooden vessels, and it can engage in fishing at sea all the year round.
A 14 hp plastic ship for small-scale fishery and 55hp and 80hp multipurpose vessels that are favourably designed and built by the company for fishing, have service life of 30 years or more and are highly effective economically.
These ships manufactured and marketed by the company enjoy good popularity for their high efficiency and good utility and their demand is on the rise at home and abroad.
