Established on July 22, Juche 71(1982)

The Paektusan Institute of Architecture is the largest institution of architectural creation and research in the DPRK, which was established on July 22, Juche 71(1982).

Exclusively engaged in designing monumental edifices, research on finishing materials for construction, green building materials and air-conditioners and improving architectural environment, the Institute consists of four designing and research divisions and the Paegyon Trading Company which is in charge of foreign trade, order-related dealings and marketing.

The management and technical teams of the Institute are well staffed with hundreds employees who are holders of professorship, doctorate, associate professorship, and masters. More than 80 of them are qualified as first and second class of the national ranking.

The Institute is distinguished in designing monumental edifices, public & residential buildings, etc. Setting research on finishing materials of construction, air-conditioning equipment, healthy buildings and improvement of architectural environment as its main R & D target, the Institute places premiums upon its implementation.

In the realm of designing public buildings, sports facilities, educational institutions, public health facilities and service establishments, it consistently maintains the traditional styles of Korea while holding fast to the architectural designing modes that satisfy the needs of the global trend as well as the Juche character, national character, originality, convenience and aesthetics.

1. Designing Division

As a design institute of authority on monumental structure design, the Designing Division has participated in designing work of monumental edifices like the Monument to Party Founding, the Korea Computer Centre, the Korea April 25 Film Studio, the Ryugyong Hotel, the Kim Won Gyun University of Music, the Kaeson Youth Park, the Rungna Dolphinarium, the Munsu Water Park and the Pyongyang International Airport terminal, as well as residential buildings such as those in Changjon Street, Mirae Scientists Street and Ryomyong Street. Thus, it is recognized as the best designing team in the country.

Staffed with architects and designers of the first and second ranks of the national standard, and promising young designers, the Division provides comprehensive designing as well as field technical services for architectural projects of national importance in the structure, facility, power, heating, furniture and landscaping.

It is engaged in research into creation of green, healthy and intelligent buildings which are consistent with the global trend of architecture.

2. Environmental Hygiene Division

The Environmental Hygiene Division is a group of able researchers who exclusively deal with hygienic matters of architectural environment and green building materials inspection.

Consisting of the environmental and building material laboratory, the physical environmental and automation laboratory, and the chemical and biological laboratory, it is engaged in hygienic evaluation and measures of architectural environment and research into green architecture, development and application of such products.

It established for the first time in the country dozens of national standards of tolerable limits and examination methods for architectural environment and quality control of building materials, and annually carries out inspection of thousands of environment and building materials in scores of terms.

In 2014 the Institute was registered as national quality experiment authorities in green building materials and environmental quality and in August 2017 it was qualified as national authentic authority on certification of green building materials (health and functional building materials).

3. Building Materials Division

The Building Materials Division is engaged in R & D of finishing materials required for architectural projects of national importance and in application & popularization nationwide.

It consists of two laboratories -- finishing building material laboratory and functional building materials laboratory.

Keeping in step with the international trend of making building materials diversified, varied and vari-coloured, the institute is making profound studies to attain the target of development and introduction of green and functional building materials.

It has developed paints for interior decoration of multi-coloured patterns, paints for wall-decorating reliefs, paints for metal polish, and decoration plaster, which are recognized as excellent in the interior decoration of buildings.

A paper plaster plate developed by the institute is in wide use in dry construction, so it took first place at an intellectual product exhibition in 2007, and many of its finishing building materials have been adopted and registered as national standards, rules and manuals, earning gold medals, top awards and good-product awards.

4. Air Conditioning Equipment Division

The Division has a long history in designing air conditioning equipment, thus it is well known as one of the top design groups in the DPR Korea.

The Air Conditioner Division is basically engaged in studying and designing modern Korean-style air conditioning facilities and geothermal and freezing equipment. Meanwhile, it provides designs of air-conditioning facilities for projects of national importance, manufactures and installs them.

With the external name of Korea Air Conditioner Technology Company the division promotes exchange and cooperation with many domestic and foreign enterprises in terms of development and manufacture of air-conditioning equipment.

It achieves good results at national sci-tech festivals, the May 21 Architectural Festival, and the national machinery designing festival by presenting national standards for air-conditioning facilities and related designs, inventions and new ideas.
